AVID Jazz presents three classic Cecil Payne albums plus , including original liner notes on of a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD.
Patterns of Jazz, Performing Charlie Parker Music, The Connection (New Original Score) plus Randy Weston plus Cecil Payne
.with these hands.
Always the sideman, never sides on his own so opens the original liner notes for our first selection, the rich and wonderful sound of Patterns of Jazz. That has been the Cecil Payne story up until now, indeed it has been a very common story amongst jazz musicians over the years! But here Mr Payne gets his chance to shine, and shine he does alongside Duke Jordan on piano, Tommy Potter on bass, Arthur Taylor on drums and Kenny Dorham on trumpet (tracks 5-8). Just listen to the richness of Cecils baritone sax! Helping Cecil on our next project Performing Charlie Parker Music are Clark Terry on trumpet, Duke Jordan on piano, Charlie Persip on drums and Ron Carter on bass. To quote from the original liner notes by long- time friend and musical colleague Randy Weston, the merger of Parker and Payne on this album has produced truly inspired music. Cecils happy weaving style, Clark Terrys whimsical, beautiful toned trumpet, Duke Jordans precise, crisp melodic piano and the combined talents of Ron Carter and Charlie Persip swinging the whole session like crazy. For The Connection Cecil Payne is again joined by Clark Terry on trumpet, Duke Jordan on piano, Charlie Persip on drums and Ron Carter on bass plus Bennie Green on trombone. This new original score was written by Cecil Payne and Kenny Drew for the off Broadway show and differs from the film score written by Freddie Redd, albeit remaining in the same area of deep feeling so as not to throw the actors off track. Our fourth selection is the plus title, but what a plus! Randy Weston plus Cecil Payne
..with these hands. For Randy Westons fourth album he chose to incorporate long time boyhood friend Cecil Payne into his usual trio line up. This was not such a surprise at the time as the two had also become firm musical cohorts with Payne often sitting in on sessions by the Weston trio! Indeed this record gives a large share of the spotlight to his (Cecils) incredibly agile handling of a supposedly heavy sounding instrument. The baritone plays a specific role in the well organised, purposeful arrangements.
All three albums plus have been digitally re-mastered.
