Some call her "the original soul sister" while others call her "the Godmother of Rock n Roll". As you listen to Sister Rosetta Tharpe's incredible voice on this exciting new release from AVID, you will surely decide, as we did, that both titles capture her extremely accurately! Starting her singing career in the late 1930s and into the 1940s, her influence truly begins in the rock n roll era with many artists of the day ringing her praises from Little Richard and Chuck Berry to Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. Into the 60s and 70s when the likes of Aretha and Tina Turner would drop her name while over in the rock world Clapton, Richards and Beck all paid their respects. Rosetta's beginnings were of course in gospel music and she never really left that field in which her unique singing style and thrilling electric guitar work marked her out as a truly original talent. Who can ever forget the first time they caught that legendary film footage of her on a rainy day station platform in Manchester in 1964. As she strutted down the platform wearing that heavy overcoat and hat, looking like the very picture of respectability only to then strap on her electric guitar and let rip with her classic "Didn't It Rain". I remember after it was over, collecting my jaw from where it had landed and thinking to myself "what was that?? If you haven't seen it check it out online, it's truly uplifting and inspirational. And just to prove that Rosetta never left gospel music take a listen to our four selections on this joyous release. It's gospel music, uniquely mixed with the blues, with R&B and with rock and soul and a lot of heart.
