For many of us of a certain age (growing up in the 60s) Johnny Mathis represents the pinnacle of easy listening. He'd be the guy you snoozed off to when he came on TV to prevent you from hearing your favourite pop band, a bit like Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck back then! But of course as time passes by and we all get a little more older and wiser and maybe our ears also mature a bit, we begin to appreciate these guys for the great voices they had. (Well, maybe not Engelbert so much!!).
So here we have four early classic albums from Johnny Mathis to prove to us all that we had been wrong all the time! On these early albums you will hear what Johnny was all about, great songs and great singing. This is a guy who chose music over an Olympic high jumping career and was performing on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1957, seven years before The Beatles! In fact his statistics are pretty mind blowing when you take a look at them. In terms of albums sales in the 1950s he ranks at number 6, in the 1960s he ranks at number 10 and in the period between 1955-2009 he ranks at number 6. That is actually a pretty extraordinary achievement! And how about this stat? One of our featured albums, Johnny Mathis Greatest Hits spent 490 weeks in the billboard Top 200, that's 9 ½ years!! And the best news of all is that Johnny is still going strong and performing at the age of 89! Respect!
