AVID Jazz continues with its Four Classic Album series with a re-mastered 2CD release from Horace Parlan, complete with original artwork, liner notes and personnel details.
The Horace Parlan Quintet -Speakin My Piece; & On The Spur Of The Moment; The Horace Parlan Trio-Us Three and The Horace Parlan Quartet-Headin South
Heres a pianist who had the hardest of tough breaks shortly after his birth in 1931 in Pittsburgh, Penn when he was sadly struck down by polio. It left Horace with a badly disfigured right hand forcing him in later life as a musician to rely heavily on his left hand. Thus he developed an incredibly forceful left hand style of chording that he would accompany with his crippled right hand. Known as a hard and post bop player Horace gained his reputation playing with the likes of Sonny Stitt and Charles Mingus (AMSC1026), Eddie Lockjaw Davis (AMSC1309), Lou Donaldson, Dexter Gordon (AMSC1199) and Stanley Turrentine (AMSC1319). Horace Parlan spent his early recording years with Blue Note and here we feature four classic albums from that era, two Quintet sessions where he is joined by the Turrentine brothers, a Trio set with George Tucker on bass and Al Harewood on drums and finally a Quartet album where the Trio is joined by the legendary conga player Ray Barretto. As with all AVID releases, we hope you enjoy this classic set and check out our extensive catalogue for more great music across jazz, blues, country and many other musical genres.
