AVID's latest release in its Classic Album series is another of our selections of female singers who are not perhaps as well remembered or revered today as they perhaps should be. Alongside the likes of Beverly Kenney, Ethel Ennis, Morgana King, Lurlean Hunter, Helen Merrill, Ann Richards and Mavis Rivers we present Jane Morgan. Reviewing her story and accomplishments we couldn't help wonder why she is not better remembered. And we think the answer lies in a couple of places. Jane was very musically accomplished from a young age and was studying to be an opera singer at Julliard. When this didn't work out she began her career on the stage and in the night clubs, before moving into TV and film work, as well as recording. So perhaps the very diversity of her career prevented her from becoming one of the true vocal legends? She also began her professional career by moving to France in the 1940s where she did in fact find tremendous success, even writing songs with the great Charles Trenet! Of course, she was also singing primarily in French! In 1954 she moved to London where she performed at both the Savoy and Palladium. Finally back in the US Jane met Dave Kapp who signed her to Kapp Records where she cut most of her early albums including our four selections. In 1959 Jane had her first UK No.1 hit with The Day The Rains Came which you will find on CD1 Track 1 of our set. You will also find her other big hit, Fascination on CD1 Track 25 as one of our bonus tracks. In the US she performed over fifty times on the Ed Sullivan show and appeared in countless stage and Broadway shows including Can Can, The King And I, Kiss Me Kate, Gentleman Prefer Blondes and Hello Dolly. But she didn't really have many hit singles to raise her profile to a greater audience. Her voice was described as "clear and strong" and some said it was "too specialised! Whatever that means? Perhaps a little too operatic? She was certainly not Doris Day although on some album covers she did look a bit like her! We will leave it up to you, dear buyer, to make your own minds up after listening to this wonderful collection. And on a final joyful note on May 3rd 2024 Jane celebrated her 100th birthday and is still going strong today.
