AVID Jazz continues with its Four Classic Albums Plus series with a re-mastered 2CD release from Ethel Ennis (3 albums) and Ernestine Anderson (1 album) complete with original artwork, liner notes and personnel details.
Ethel Ennis:- "Lullabies For Loser"; "Change Of Scenery"; "Have You Forgotten?" and Ernestine Anderson:- "The Fascinating Ernestine" plus five bonus tracks.
Over the years we at AVID have been compiling a substantial catalogue of great jazz music which seems to be getting harder and more expensive to find as those years roll by. We are particularly proud that we have often featured some of the lesser-known female jazz singers from the golden era. In our catalogue, names like Mavis Rivers, Beverly Kenney, Lurlean Hunter, Dorothy Donegan, Morgana King, Betty Roche, Marilyn Moore and now Ethel Ennis can stand alongside the legendary jazz greats like Billie, Ella, Peggy, Sarah, Dinah and Anita. And just to show how highly we rate Ethel's singing we've added another classic Ernestine Anderson album from 1959, "The Fascinating Ernestine" (see AMSC1170 for our other Ernestine set) to sit alongside Ethels three classic contributions to this Four Classic Albums set. Ethel Ennis was born in Baltimore in 1932 and spent most of her later working life in and around that area where she was known as "The First Lady Of Jazz". She found early success with our three featured albums on Jubilee and Capitol before moving on to record for RCA Victor. She was also a featured singer in not only Benny Goodman's band during a 1958 tour of Europe but also Duke Ellington's and Count Basie's! What more do we need to say!!?
Perhaps one reason she did not find the level of success that others had was because not only did she remain mostly in the Baltimore area but during a five-decade long career she took quite some time away from the recording studios. As you will hear from these fine albums that time away was not only to potentially hinder her musical career but also to deprive us of many more great Ethel Ennis albums that sadly were never recorded. So let's enjoy what we have and with a little Ernestine Anderson thrown in for extra pleasure! As with all AVID releases, we hope you enjoy this classic set and check out our extensive catalogue for more great music across jazz, pop, R&B, country, rock n roll, rockabilly, blues and many other musical genres.
