True country music recording legend Don Gibson finally takes his place in the AVID country hall of fame. Long overdue of course, but if you take a look below at the other country legends in our catalogue, perhaps we may be forgiven for taking so long. We wanted to get the selection right and we think we did by featuring five of the great man’s classic early recordings. As you will see from the writing credits Don Gibson was one of the earliest country singer songwriters who in 1955 had, in fact, made a very conscious decision to focus on his songwriting. He had had some moderate success before this but neither RCA nor Columbia who he had been signed to really knew what to do with him. All that was to change in 1957 when he re-signed to RCA following the incredible success of his classic song Sweet Dreams. A year later came Oh Lonesome Me and during the period between 1958-1961 Don would have 11 top ten hit singles. Teaming up with legendary producer Chet Atkins, Don’s career really took off during the late 1950s and 1960s. He was somehow able to mix the pop sensibilities of Elvis and Buddy Holly with his own country and honky tonk background to create a unique country/pop hybrid. We hope you will enjoy the sound of a man who many during his lifetime referred to as “the sad poet” due to his songs of lost love, loneliness and heartache.
